Editorial Services

Kit Lane Editing offers editorial consultations for all our editing services. To the right are detailed descriptions of our offerings and pricing. All our rates are set off the EFA chart

Developmental Editing

Receive thorough feedback on plot structure, character development, world building, and pacing for your novel or short story. Extensive notes and in-line commentary with detailed remarks that focus on finding inconsistencies like plot holes, loose ends that aren’t tied up, and refining character arcs. Heavy focus on craft elements such as setting, timing, continuity, point of view, theme, characterization, and pacing for the overall picture and scene-by-scene. Perfect for authors looking to refine the core of their work.

Pricing is based on project word count, and turnaround time requested by client. Average rates run from $0.03 to $0.04 per word, with a rate of $0.05 per word for turnarounds faster than the editor's standard timeline. All rates are based on and in compliance with rates in the EFA chart.

All developmental edits include a free 30 minute initial consultation. Sample edits are available, with samples for manuscripts spanning 1,000-3,000 (based on a 100,000 word text) for $75-$125. Samples for short stories span 100-300 words (based on a 10,000 word text) for $10-$25.

All booked editorial services require a 50% deposit to begin, include digital documents: a marked-up manuscript with in-line commentary done in Microsoft Word with track changes, and a separate, PDF document with editorial notes and feedback. Follow-up calls are available after completion to answer questions and discuss feedback, the first one is included in the cost and lasts up to one hour. Subsequent calls may be available based on editor’s discretion, ranging from free to $15/hour.

Copy Editing

Ensure your manuscript is free from grammatical errors and syntax issues, check for consistency in verb tenses, and continuity of language in dialogue and narration. Ideal for authors ready to streamline their narrative, who have already undergone developmental edits (this could be self-edited or looked over by myself or another editor). Copy edits focus on the small details, are usually done after one to two rounds of developmental edits, and one or more rounds of beta-reading for the best results.

Line Editing

Focuses on enhancing writing style, improving clarity, and ensuring smooth sentence flow while maintaining the author's voice. Narrow in scope, setting aside the big picture in favor of refining small details to really make the project stand out. Removes things like redundant or repetitive words and phrases, improves word choice to make prose stand out, and tightens sentences to make writing clear and concise while preserving the author's voice. Suitable for authors who have already undergone developmental edits and/or beta-reading.

Proofreading

Fine-tuning a fully edited manuscript before publication; this last stage of editing focuses on catching typos, misspellings, punctuation errors, formatting issues, and other grammatical errors. It is the final step before publishing, and meant as a way to catch any missed errors that slipped through a copy or line edit.

Beta Reading

For authors writing in the romantasy, epic fantasy, paranormal fantasy, and urban fantasy genres. Feedback from a reader-oriented perspective on plot structure, character development, world building, and pacing for your novel or short story. Brief notes and in-line commentary on what worked for me and what did not from a reader-specific angle with short explanations on why. Focus tailored to author’s needs with emphasis on plot holes, character consistency, and world building. Helpful for authors who have already undergone developmental edits, but need reader reactions before querying or entering later stages of editing like copy and line edits.
